Brussel Sprout Picking
Growing up in the countryside and with living on farms as a child, my family were pretty self sufficient .
We always had an enormous vegetable patch which my parents would tend to constantly all year round as well as often having fruit from our orchards, fruit bushes and any planters big enough to grow a good crop of vegetables or fruit. So crop picking was a fun and important activity.
Not owning a big enough garden my self to provide my family with such a variety of home grown foods, we are pretty limited to what we can grow at home. Luckily my parents do still have a huge vegetable patch which is where we found these beauties!
Not only had my daughters not seen brussell sprouts growing properly as i would say- but they had certainly not picked them by hand. Im afraid my vegetable growing is restricted to spindly runner beans and the odd tomato !
It made a fun activity and they learnt a lot . Skills such as how to pick the sprouts properly without them falling apart or dropping them. Then taking them indoors to wash them and preparing them for lunch.
I am constantly appreciative of where we live and the access that my family have to this sort of life style which I never want my children to take for granted .
