Ruby Red Devons- A New Life

Introducing the next generation at The Paradise Herd!

These beautiful girls were born today and are just the start of an exciting time of the year for the farm.

Devon cattle are a stunning shade of red, the shade varies from a deep red to a chestnut colour. The darker the red the better in regards to showing and ties in with their nick name " Ruby Reds".

My daughter is a junior member of the Devon Cattle Breeders Society with her Grandad so one of these babies may be her first show entry when she has learnt to handle correctly !

Arent they just gorgeous!

'Bookies'

Today I had a little baking time with my youngest daughter and her little friend.

I love to do baking with my children. As a child I spent a lot of time with my Mum in the kitchen, watching her bake cakes and prepare meals for our family. Most of which was home grown ingredients from our gardens or orchards.

Today we decided to make biscuits with a twist- the twist was.... the ingredients were chosen by the children.

Can you tell I was feeling brave?

Together the girls chose (along side the usual Flour, Butter and Sugar ) dairy free chocolate buttons, Marshmallows and Rice Crispies.

We followed no particular order , and there was a lot of giggles and mess but they had a fantastic time. Both girls were able to get their hands into the dough mixture and really mix it together.

We formed the dough into balls which they placed onto a greased baking paper covered tray ( I was not sure at this point how well these creations were going to come out!)

They went into the oven at 180 for 15 minutes until they had turned golden brown and let off an amazing smell !

The official tasting went down well once cooled- there was utter silence from both sixteen month old and two year old giggly girls. They were that good!

My little guest chef took some home to her family and my little chef was able to share her half of the creations with my eldest daughter and husband when they came home. They also went down very well!

I have decided that we should call them 'Bookies'! Not quite biscuits- not quite cookies- Bookies

Why not try letting your children lead the baking this week and see what you come up with!

Hedgehog Home

Hedgehog Home
Last year we were lucky enough to have a little family of Hedgehogs move into our garden.

We provided food and water for them and cleared their path to where they had moved in.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that they will stay this year as well, so we have been preparing the garden. No slug pellets, gaps in the fence so they can move around at night and plenty of hidey holes for them to go to.

Our local garden centre sells hedgehog food and mealworms ( hedgehogs favourites) but they also enjoy cat biscuits and meaty pet food. They also need a constant supply of water .

If you spot a hedgehog in your garden during the day time- please contact British Hedgehog Preservation Society for advice as it may need help.

Muck Boots

Many women are obsessed with shoes- Heels, Flats,Sandals,Boots or even Flip-Flops!

My name is Kathy- and I am obsessed with Wellington Boots.

Growing up on a farm meant Wellington Boots were a staple part of my attire. I have multiple pairs which came in handy for over adventurous puddle jumping or summer growth spurts.

Into my teens , the rage for patterned boots really  came about. I worked in a local clothes shop and we started to stock them..My wages started to buy them and, as they say, the rest is history. I even did a case study on them at college.

I have trialed many different brands of wellies and work boots, ranging from cheap to expensive. I will say that higher expense certainly does not always equate high quality.

My husband bought me these Muck Boots- Artic Adventure in Black and Maroon for Christmas , thanks to my ever so subtle hints....daily!
First of all , my Muck Boots came in a beautiful box . They were well presented and a gorgeous colour. I was in love instantly.
They are super cosy as they are fleece lined which is surrounded by Muck Boots signature neoprene cuff which is what attracted me in the first place. According to the website they will keep your toes toasty to temperatures as low as  -30ÂșC !

I have tested them and they are 100% waterproof/puddleproof and although the sole looks really thick, they are so light its unbelievable . This does not by any means subtract from how tough they are !

They are currently retailing at £90.00 on     http://www.muckbootcompany.co.uk/   which is a complete bargain when you consider how long these are going to last!

My one criticism?

I only have one pair!
